Vernon S. Tenney Jr. 75 of Maplewood Avenue, passed away Thursday (Feb. 10, 2022) at St. James Hospital.
Born in Meadville, PA., Feb. 13, 1946, he was the son of Vernon S. Tenney Sr. and Mary Stauffer Tenney. He was a graduate of Meadville High School and Edinboro State College where he received his Bachelor’s degree. He then attended Clarkson University where he received his Master’s degree.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a Communicant of St. Anns Church in Hornell. He was also a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge and AMVETS.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister; Esther Ernewein and his brother; John Tenney.
Surviving are his wife; Brenda Stevens Tenney, his daugher; Mary (Joe) Buono and their children; Aubrey Buono and Rowan Buono, all of Canandaigua, his sons; Lewis (Pamela) Urban and their children; Brandon(Kayla)Urban and Kyle Urban, all of Alden, NY, Vernon S.”Trey” (Diana) Tenney and their children; Jenna Tenney and Alexa Tenney, all of Canandaigua, sisters; Pauline Hunt of Jamestown and Shirley Bailey of Meadville, PA, nieces and nephews.
Vern spent over six decades teaching high school and college mathematics to thousands of students. His career began at Meadville High School in 1968 where he taught for one year before moving to Hornell. He taught at Hornell High School until 2002 where he retired for the first time. He then returned to the classroom to teach at Greenwood Central, Hammondsport Central and Alfred State before finally hanging up the Graphing Calculator in 2018. He will be fondly remembered for his caring, practical, student centered approach.

Due to the Covid Pandemic, the family is not observing calling hours. Friends may join the family on Tuesday at 2 PM, at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell, where his funeral service will be held with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
