LaGrande Dean McCarthy Jr. 91, a resident of the Woodlands, passed away Sunday (Feb. 12, 2023) at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Hornell, (.October 1, 1931), the son of LaGrande McCartthy Sr. and Cecile Davern McCarthy, he had resided in this area all his life. He was a graduate of Arkport Central School, Class of 1949, and had been employed as a truck driver for 40 years. He was employed by the former GLF in Arkport, the Polly-O Dairy, and the Department of Transportation in Arkport. Dean proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp from 1952-1954.
Dean was a life member of the Arkport American Legion, the Arkport Historical Society, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, and watching Western Movies.
He was predeceased by his parents, a brother at birth, his sister, Joyce Howe and a grandson, Johnathan Freeborn.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn McCarthy of Hornell, his daughter, Cheryl (Hugh) Freeborn of Portville, and one son, Paul (Keren) McCarthy of Fremont, step-son, Timmy (Debra) Mulhollen of Hornell, three grandsons, Jayce Freeborn, Jeremy Freeborn and Brian McCarthy, two granddaughters, Bonnie Reukauf and Pamela Edwards, five great granddaughters.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Green Team at Care First Hospice for the kind and compassionate care given to Dean.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held for the family at Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport on Wednesday (Feb. 15, 2023) at 2 PM with Fr. Thomas Gramley officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded.
