James A. Comes, 88 of Almond passed away Sunday (May 28, 2023) in Smethport. PA.
Born in Kane, PA. March 3, 1935, he was the son of John W. and Bessie Swatsler Comes. Jim had made his home in Almond for the past 63 years, He and his late wife Agnes had owned and operated Comes Greenhouse in Almond for several years. He was a graduate of Alfred State College and had been employed Horticultural Specialist at the State University Of New York at Alfred. He had been awarded the Chancellor Award for Excellence in 1989.
Jim enjoyed his membership in the Almond Lions Club and the Almond Coffee Club.
He was predeceased by his wife Agnes Comes in 2015, son James Comes in 2008 and sister Val Jean Huntley.
Surviving relatives are daughter; Cindy (John Ketz) of Connecticut, Daughter in law Michele (Mel Stafford) Comes of Wellsboro,PA; Son Joe (Sandy) Comes of Buffalo; Brothers John (Julie) Comes of Smethport,PA, brother in law Carl (Mary) Meyer of NY, sister Mary (Duane) Kleinhans of Dayton,PA, sister in law Margie Kaufman; Keith and Adrianne Stanley of Almond along with extended family; Grandchildren Jonathon Ketz, Nicholas Moyer, Michael (Michelle) Simoneit, Patrick Simoneit; great grandchildren include Hunter and Asher, several nieces and nephews including special niece Holly (Dave) Comes Grady.
The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday June 1, 2023 at the Bender Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo Street in Hornell from 12-2 PM and 4-6 PM. Funeral Services will follow calling hours at 6 PM. Burial will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery.
