Donald Kaake

Obituary of Donald Edward Kaake

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Don Kaake, a man of boundless creativity, dedication to his community, and profound love for the environment, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 25, 2023. Born to William and Laura Kaake in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, Don's life was marked by resilience and a deep passion for the arts and the environment.

Growing up on the shores of Lake St. Clair, Don's love for water began early. His days were filled with adventures, fixing up boats and engines, fishing, swimming, and ice skating. This connection with nature shaped his life.

Don joined the Navy at 17, and traveled to Morocco and beyond. After leaving the Navy with a different view of the world, Don pursued his passion for the arts, enrolling in art school at Detroit Institute of the Arts. Here, he met Patricia and their love blossomed, leading to a lifetime partnership in the arts, community engagement, social justice advocacy, environmental stewardship, and nurturing their loving family.

Together, they embarked on countless adventures, particularly during their creative endeavors in Detroit. However, as the city posed increasing challenges for their young family, they made the bold move to Angelica, NY, in 1975. This shift allowed Don to adapt his pursuits to the evolving needs of his family. He became a highly skilled contractor and craftsman, dedicating himself to the restoration and reimagination of buildings.

In his relentless quest for creativity and self-expression, Don ventured into boat-building, sewing, making baskets, and learning AutoCAD. His love for ceramics was steadfast, and he supported fellow artists throughout his life.

Don Kaake's legacy extends far beyond his art and craftsmanship. He was a true advocate for preserving the natural world, instilling this reverence in those fortunate enough to know him.

His memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.

Don is survived by his wife of 63 years Patricia Kaake, children Shaw Kaake and wife Yoshi, Baird Kaake and wife Ellen, Shannon Kaake, Marika Burke, brother William (Bill) Kaake, grandchildren Megan Kaake, Moss Burke, Luna Kaake and Taiyo Kaake as well as his loved nieces and nephews.

A burial office and holy communion service was held at St Paul’s Episcopal Church on October 7, 2023.

The Kaake family would like to extend their gratitude for the love and support from our community during this time of sorrow.
